Advice Published for Newly Qualified Prescribing Pharmacists

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has published advice for newly qualified prescribing pharmacists, ahead of the first cohort joining the register as independent prescribers from summer 2026. It highlights key considerations to support safe and effective prescribing from the outset.

This comes as independent prescribing is due to be introduced into the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF) in 2026/27 as an extension of Pharmacy First and the Pharmacy Contraception Service from autumn 2026. Details of NHS guidance on clinical governance for prescribing will be published in due course.

NMS Myth Busting

To help tackle misconceptions surrounding the New Medicine Service (NMS).

Myth: Trainee pharmacists can provide the NMS Intervention and Follow up stages.

FACT CHECK: The NMS Intervention and Follow up stages must be provided by a pharmacist who has self-declared that they have the skills and knowledge to do so.  However, the pharmacy can make good use of skill mix by allowing support staff to book appointments, prepare copies of forms, and transcribing details of the consultations where these are later entered into electronic records.

Pharmacy contractors can complete and claim payment for an unlimited number of New Medicine Service (NMS) interventions, but the total number they will be reimbursed for by the NHS is strictly capped at 1% of their eligible monthly prescription volume.
